What it involves
Preventative dentistry covers routine check-ups, professional cleaning, and the early detection of dental issues. During a typical appointment, your dentist examines your teeth and gums, removes built-up plaque and tartar, takes X-rays if appropriate, and offers personalised advice on caring for your teeth at home.

Who it’s for
Most adults benefit from a check-up every six to twelve months, though your dentist may suggest a different interval based on your individual needs. Regular visits are particularly worthwhile if you’re due for a clean, have noticed sensitivity or bleeding gums, or simply haven’t been to a dentist in a while.
Children are welcome too. Routine examinations may be bulk-billed under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule where eligible.
What to expect
A standard check-up and clean usually takes around 45 minutes. We work at a pace that suits you and explain what we’re doing as we go. If we find anything that needs attention, we’ll talk you through the options and provide a written quote before any further treatment is booked.

Common questions
How often should I have a check-up?
Many adults are seen every six to twelve months, but the right interval depends on your individual needs. Your dentist will suggest a schedule after your examination.
Do I need X-rays at every visit?
No. X-rays are taken only when they’re clinically appropriate, for example to check between teeth or below the gum line where a visual exam can’t see.
Will a clean hurt?
A routine scale and clean is usually comfortable. If your gums are tender or inflamed, let us know and we’ll adjust our approach and pace.
Is the check-up covered by my health fund?
Many private health funds include preventative dental in their extras cover. We can process most claims on the spot through HICAPS, so you only pay any gap.
